Developed by Louisiana State University for American growers, LSU Purple is a fast-growing, productive variety that bears small to medium-sized fruit with deep purple skin and ruby red flesh. The flavor is rich and berry-like with notes of molasses and caramel when fully ripe. Bred to resist splitting, pests, and disease, LSU Purple is great for humid climates or first-time fig growers. Fruit can ripen in three distinct flushes throughout the warm season, with highest quality in midsummer.
As with all figs, it's high in antioxidants and beneficial minerals, and provides healthy prebiotics for the gut. Fiber content is high enough to reduce glycemic index quite a bit. One of the best figs to zone push, protecting with a mound of hay over winter to increase its hardiness by a zone.
