‘Freddy’ is a male pollinator variety necessary for fruit production in female sea buckthorn plants like ‘Patty.’ While he doesn’t bear fruit himself, Freddy offers strong cold tolerance, vigorous growth, and dense branching, ensuring excellent pollen coverage during bloom. Sea buckthorn shrubs are nitrogen-fixing and thrive in poor soils. They are also wind-hardy and ideal for shelterbelts or hedges. Essential to be able to harvest the female berries’ famously sour but wildly nutritious fruit, which is a verifiable superfood, containing rare amino acids such as palmitoleic acid, an omega 7 rarely found in plant products, but also 17 other amino acids, as well as 17 vitamins and 14 minerals. This makes Sea Buckthorn uniquely beneficial to skin and brain health, commonly winding up in ointments and topicals for improving skin elasticity, hydration, burn injuries and scarring.
