Viking is a vigorous and productive cultivar of black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa), grown for its clusters of glossy, dark purple-black berries that ripen in late summer. While tart when eaten raw, the berries are rich in polyphenols and anthocyanins—some of the highest found in any berry. Often used in juices, jams, or syrups, Viking's fruit has a deep, earthy apple or grape flavor that blends well with sweeter fruits. Studies suggest aronia supports heart health, lowers inflammation, and promotes a healthy microbiome. The plant itself is highly ornamental, with white umbels of spring flowers and brilliant red fall foliage. Tolerates poor soil, drought, and neglect once established.
