"Black Velvet" Gooseberry

Black Velvet Gooseberry is well known as the best gooseberries for eating out of hand. Massive crops (5lbs+) of large, deliciously sweet and slightly tart fruit, reminiscent of a slightly sour grape or sweet blueberry. Berries are large, reddish black in color, and get darker and sweeter as they hang from the thorny branches. The name has nothing to do with geese, instead coming from the French word for "red currant," groseille.
